Character Name & Pronouns: Saint-Germain, she/her
Character Age: 1000+
Canon: Senki Zesshou Symphogear
Canon Point: mid-episode 12
History: wiki ((cw: sex slavery, mass human sacrifice, fanservice))
Personality:
Saint-Germain is the world's stupidest smart person.
No, really. This is someone who has devoted centuries to the pursuit of "liberating mankind from oppression", but when asked the end result, she can only manage to say "The world...will change. But some things...won't." The cruelty of her organization's leader appalls her, but his betrayal still stuns her. She's killed thousands of people, but she insists she's just. The hypocrisy is strong in this one.
Saint-Germain's problem is that she's obsessed, which narrows her focus. Ever since her father let her mother die, she's been trying to find a way to prevent anyone from wielding control over anyone else. The method she hits on is alchemy, the pursuit of "perfection", and she grants herself eternal life to chase her goal. Yet major alchemy requires life energy to perform, so she can't gather enough power without killing.
She sees no alternatives to this. Saint-Germain is a textbook example of sunk-cost-fallacy thinking: if she abandons her methods, everyone she's killed will have died in vain. If she doubts this path for even a second, the weight of her sins will overwhelm her, so she puts her blinders on and shoves forward, fists clenched in anger.
Which isn't to say she doesn't feel terrible. Despite her edginess, Saint-Germain is a goody-two-shoes. She counts her kills to hold herself accountable, and she describes using her power to help someone as "the first time I didn't want to die". She would rather sacrifice herself than anyone else, and deeply appreciates anyone who shares her vision. Her sense of responsibility is so hyperactive that she freely takes the blame for things that aren't really her fault. Even her motivation isn't "get back at the world" but "ensure no one else feels the shame I did". Saint-Germain doesn't have a selfish bone in her body.
Unfortunately, she doesn't have a socially savvy one, either. Although Saint-Germain tends to keep a cool head (except when pontificating about Revolution, which works her up), she misses most social cues and is embarrassingly earnest in all she does. She's dramatic and mysterious yet blunt. She calls everybody by their full names. Saint-Germain is comedic in her seriousness.
Within her chosen field, she's also very skilled. Saint-Germain is a talented alchemist and, though her typical tactics lean towards cautiousness, thinks well on her feet in combat. She studies hard, understands complicated metaphysical concepts easily, and is always watching the big picture. As befits an alchemist, she's a perfectionist. Her boss refers to her as "too smart". She's high INT but low WIS.
Overall, Saint-Germain prides herself on being "unchanging" - her commitment to her ideals won't waver. Those who can't bend break, though, and she nearly does when her boss Adam reveals he never intended to use their power for humanity's sake. Fortunately for her, she'd just been shown a different way forward: the protagonist, Hibiki, has taught her that you can defy a cruel truth by choosing to believe in a better outcome - which Hibiki sums up in the phrase "But even so!".
It's in the spirit of "But even so!" that Saint-Germain accepts the invitation to Rosavelle. Determined to defeat the oppressor Adam, she's come to learn the magic of this world and whether it's transferable to hers. A nice place to live will be a culture shock for her, though. Does she, whose fists are stained, deserve to take these hands....?
Someone hug this idiot.
Abilities:
Saint-Germain is an alchemist! Like historical alchemy, Symphogear alchemy functions by breaking down one substance and turning it into another, but Saint-Germain's particular specialty lies in using intangible materials (like "life energy") to generate tangible ones (magic bullets etc). Her most common applications of alchemy are:
⚜️ "Perfect Body" - Saint-Germain has reconstituted her own body with alchemy so that it lives forever and never ages. In game this won't have much practical application save to acknowledge she's old as hell.
⚜️ Octaves of the Aristotle - Elemental manipulation (fire, earth, air, water). She can both physically summon elements and use them for side-effects associated with that element: wind as camouflage, water to heal, etc. Each of these elements has a symbol and color associated with it that tend to appear in a magic circle as part of a casting.
⚜️ Alchemic Silver - Yellow magic circles indicate all-purpose alchemy, represented by the symbol for "silver", the next-purest metal after gold. Saint-Germain can use alchemic silver as a shield, a stepping-stone in midair, or sometimes to spy on others.
⚜️ Faust Robe - This is magical girl armor created by the energy produced by the Philosopher's Stone, a "perfect substance" she can activate by a transformation item called a Spellcaster. Saint-Germain's Spellcaster takes the form of a pistol, so her Faust Robe attacks are projectile-based, and her armor has little guns hidden all over it. Symphogear is silly.
⚜️ The Philosopher's Stone - In addition to being her henshin item, the Stone serves as a "universal purifier". The light it shines is capable of burning away anything classified as an "impurity", like cursed magic or illness. In-game, I figure whether this works vs relevant characters' powersets is up to the player of that character.
⚜️ Song - Saint-Germain is able to work/power up her alchemy by singing. She is not reliant on song, however, the way the Symphogears are.
⚜️ Life Energy Conversion - Saint-Germain can OTK people by converting their whole bodies to life energy. I don't anticipate her wanting to do this in Rosavelle but I intend to nerf her by removing this ability because that would be VERY FUNNY. Figure something else out, dumbass!!!
All other formulae we see her using require more high-level alchemists' participation and/or more harvested life energy than she's got on hand, so she's conveniently nerfed herself.
Bloom Bond Flower:
⚜️ Forget-me-not: Saint-Germain has lived so long she's "gotten used to being left behind", and her methods of striving for her ideals involve a LOT of death. Despite that, she still believes in humanity (as a concept) even if humans (individually) remain held back by the curse of oppression. Get her in a Team and she becomes the Strict Mom Friend.
⚜️ Hydrangea: Saint-Germain's self-assured perfectionism often comes across as haughty, and she definitely has a LOT of pride - to her, dignity is tantamount. She's also a devoted comrade who's not averse to making slow, steady progress.
⚜️ Tulip: This one might be a little too warm-and-fuzzy for the grim Saint-Germain, but behind the edgenerd exterior she is a consummate idealist who feels guilty about All The Murder and will never stop striving to finally be of use to humanity.
